The muscles of the trunk (or core as people like to call them, or worse yet ‘abs’) are responsible for linking your limbs, transmitting power and stabilising your whole body, especially the spine. Any movements tax the trunk and without healthy and strong trunk muscles its often the case that people develop back problems and postural problems. The best way to strengthen, but is to use resistance (bands, plates, dumbells etc) and low repetitions like 5×5 for example.

I wouldn’t say I’m an expert in the field but I get trained by former and current international fighters. I train for Muay-Thai and BJJ which might clarify a bit of where I’m coming from. I used to do everything in an orderly fashion. But there is no order in the ring. 1 second your taking shots to the head the next to the body. Monday I was hit 200 times in the stomach (punches, kicks) before I started lifting weights, did burpees between sets, sprints after weights and then sparring.
